What happens during F1 test?

THE MAIN TARGETS

The main targets are:

  • Evaluate reliability and mileage: these are the top priority. The more laps you complete, the more data you collect to try to discover and resolve any technical issues;
  • Confirm car development: verify that the car performs on the track as predicted by wind tunnel and computer simulations;
  • Test performance and benchmarking: understand the car's power, balance, and potential lap pace;
  • Test tyres: test the compounds that will be provided during the season;

HOW DO THEY UNFOLD?

Each team has a very busy and top-secret testing program. The cars are covered with sensors. Each lap produces thousands of data points that technicians analyze in real time in the garage.  In addition to everything listed above, the focus is particularly on race simulations and low-fuel runs, which are essential for testing tire degradation, fuel consumption, reliability under prolonged stress, pure speed, and qualifying performance.

The FIA imposes a maximum number of test days. Garages are closed, technicians cover the cars when they are stationary, and photographs of sensitive details are prohibited. It's a game of espionage and counter-espionage.
